Open Rank Professor of Special Education
The School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill announces
the availability of a new tenure-track open rank position in Special Education.
Successful candidates should be energetic individuals committed to preparing both
pre-service and in-service educators to work with diverse students with high-incidence
disabilities in a dedicated and accomplished community of faculty, students, and
staff.
Context: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a doctoral granting
institution in the University of North Carolina system. The School of Education
offers licensure and master’s degrees as well as a growing doctoral program in special
education. We seek a person with a strong research orientation who is motivated
to work with colleagues both within the department and across the School of Education
to improve special education both in North Carolina and nationally. The successful
applicant will have the potential to develop, or have already established, a funded
program of research in an area that enhances the school’s strengths and builds our
capacity to be of greater service to students with special needs in inclusive settings.
Preference with be given to applicants with interest and expertise in adolescents
and young adults with special needs and who has demonstrated the excellent teaching
skills needed to contribute to our doctoral, preparation, and master’s programs.
Qualifications:
- Earned doctorate in special education or appropriate field with an emphasis in high-incidence
disabilities and a secondary education area of expertise (e.g., urban studies, disproportionate
representation, technology, assessment, transition).
- At least three years experience teaching diverse students with disabilities in K-12
environments or the equivalent.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate productively with other educators both at the
university and in P-12 schools to improve learning for students with disabilities.
- Demonstrated ability or potential to conduct externally-funded research and to contribute
to the empirical and theoretical literature in the field.
- Demonstrated ability as or potential to become an outstanding university-level teacher.
Responsibilities:
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in special education, including those on
assessment, instructional methods, and related topics.
- Advise doctoral students with interests in special education.
- Meet expectations for scholarship, including grant writing, appropriate for a research
institution.
- Contribute to the instructional, research, and service mission of the School of
Education and the University.
- Participate in local, state, and national conversations on improving learning opportunities
for students with disabilities.
- Coordinate graduate licensure and master’s programs in special education
- Provide leadership in planning and implementing strategies for creating a more diverse
student community in the School of Education's programs of study.
