RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instruct undergraduate and graduate Core Skills and Special Education methods courses consistent with Minnesota Board of Teaching Special Education standards on the Winona and/or Rochester campuses.
  • Advise undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Supervise graduate professional papers and theses.
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate practicum and student teachers.
  • Maintain an active program of scholarship.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with area schools and agencies.
  • Serve on program, department, college, and university committees.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, administrators, and members of the community to meet program, department, college, and university goals.

QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM

  • Doctorate in Special Education or directly related field required. ABD may be considered. (Note: If candidate does not possess terminal degree by date of appointment, the candidate will be hired into a fixed term position.  When the candidate completes the terminal degree, the candidate will have the ability to apply and be considered for any probationary openings at the University.)
  • Possess or be eligible for licensure in Emotional Behavioral Disorders.
  • At least 5 years successful K-12 Special Education teaching experience.
  • Evidence of effective teaching skills.
  • Demonstration of the ability to collect, analyze and use data to make decisions.

Preferred

  • Demonstration of/potential for scholarly productivity.
  • Demonstration of professional service.
  • Evidence of technology use within a learning environment.
  • Evidence of the ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Evidence of a commitment to integrating multicultural/global issues in teaching. Work experience with underrepresented populations.
  • Specialization/Licensure in autism.
  • Demonstration of knowledge of and interest in diverse cultures and populations.

CORE SKILLS/TARGETED AREAS:

FOUNDATIONS

Candidates should demonstrate an understanding of historical and philosophical foundations, legal bases, and contemporary issues in Special Education. Also needed is an understanding of the roles and structures of general and special education, classification of disabilities, stereotyped attitudes toward people with disabilities, and the complexity of coexisting disabilities.

ASSESSMENT

Candidates should demonstrate knowledge and skills for referral, assessment, team planning, and placement procedures. This includes due process and data privacy; pre-referral intervention and response to instruction; components of comprehensive, unbiased assessment; administration of formal and informal assessments; and influences of cultural and linguistic diversity. An understanding of the relationship between assessment findings, individual education program planning, and the full array of service options is required.

INSTRUCTION

Candidates should demonstrate knowledge and skills for using individual education programs to design and implement developmentally appropriate instruction and how to evaluate program effectiveness. This includes adapting and modifying curriculum and instruction; application of remedial methods and accommodations; use of assistive technologies, task analysis, crisis prevention and intervention; applying behavioral theory in developing and implementing behavior management plans; team teaching; and compiling data for purposes of continuous student and program evaluation and improvement.

COLLABORATION

Candidates should demonstrate knowledge and skills regarding collaborative relationships with families and other professionals to support student development, learning, and well-being. This includes the life-long impact of disabilities; family systems theory; how to work with family members in designing, implementing, and evaluating individual education programs; small group processes; interagency collaboration; consultation and training in specific content areas; and how to direct and monitor paraprofessionals, volunteers and peer tutors.

THE SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS: Winona State University offers a Bachelor’s of Science and Master’s Degrees in Special Education with preparation for (1) Early Childhood Special Education licensure and K-12 licensure in (2) Developmental Disabilities and (3) Learning Disabilities. A general curricular or cross-categorical licensure program is under development.

Department Head—Early, Elementary, and Reading Education 

The College of Education at James Madison University invites applications for the position of Department Head for Early, Elementary, and Reading Education (EERE).  The EERE Department is committed to the preparation of educators and others who teach and serve children birth through sixth grade and their families in a diverse society.  The department offers 5-year initial licensure programs in Inclusive Early Childhood Education (birth-3rd grade); Elementary Education (PreK-6); a post-baccalaureate MAT in Early Childhood Education (PreK-3); and a Reading Specialist M.Ed. program—all of which are aligned with SPA standards and endorsements approved by the Virginia Department of Education and NCATE.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Deep working and theoretical knowledge of contemporary teacher education practices, policies, and trends as reflected in the department’s licensure and endorsement programs;
  • Substantive administrative and leadership experience demonstrating an ability to effectively manage short and long term projects involving institutional colleagues and school-based partners that span local, state, and national venues;
  • Experience working collaboratively with school divisions and attuned to their needs and current legislative initiatives that influence them; 
  • Recognition as a skilled educator whose experiential base is firmly grounded in teacher education and supporting the professional growth and development of both beginning and experienced teachers;
  • Communication and human relationship skills conducive to a collegial, productive, and efficient work environment;
  • Defined area of scholarship that complements the mission of the EERE department, the College of Education, and James Madison University;
  • Attained (minimally) rank of Associate Professor with tenure at an institution commensurate in size and stature to James Madison University;
  • Ability to promote and equitably facilitate faculty and staff support and development (research, conferences, grants, leaves, workshops, seminars, etc.);
  • Experience developing and implementing faculty mentorship initiatives.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a teacher education program;
  • Experience directing multiple programs within the context of a larger organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic leadership in program conceptualization, curriculum development, program evaluation, accountability, and improvement;
  • Facilitate enhancement of the department’s reputation and impact including status within the college, university, and at regional/national levels;
  • Supervise and manage support staff to facilitate department operations;
  • Evaluate faculty and staff accomplishments and performance;
  • Articulate the need and advocate for departmental resources (money, positions, space, equipment, etc.);
  • Teach courses within one’s area of expertise;
  • Complete other duties assigned by the Dean of the College of Education.

The successful applicant will have an earned doctorate in an area of early, elementary, or reading education or a closely related field (e.g., Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Psychology, Educational Assessment).  In addition, applicants should possess at least three years of PreK-6 teaching or comparable experience in education and familiarity with evidence-based practices within the education profession.  Applicants should provide evidence of teaching effectiveness, scholarship, and the ability to work collaboratively in partnership with colleagues in the College of Education, colleagues across the University, those in schools, agencies or other settings, and community services.

Assistant Professor, Exceptional Education 

The College of Education at James Madison University announces a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor position in Exceptional Education to be filled beginning August, 2012. Successful candidates will balance teaching, scholarship, and service responsibilities. Applicants must demonstrate their ability to work collaboratively with faculty within the Exceptional Education Department as well as across the College of Education and the university.

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching and supervising in the area of exceptionalities including methods of special education at a secondary level, transition services, and/or low-incidence disabilities.
  • Developing and conducting a professional line of research and demonstrating the ability to supervise master’s level research.
  • Advising of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Providing service to the department, college, university and local school agencies.

The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate in special education or a closely aligned discipline.  In addition, the candidate will have at least three years of successful teaching of students with low incidence disabilities or teaching students with disabilities at the secondary level with a demonstrated expertise of transition services.  Applicants with advanced knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis will be given preference. Demonstrated success in university teaching is an asset.
